Facebook Obsession

Has Facebook become an obsession? Global statistics can’t agree more. According to reports, Facebook has long surpassed the 500 million users mark, with more than half of that population logging in and using the social media network on a daily basis. Further statistics also revealed that a staggering 75% of Americans use Facebook; that’s 3 out of every 4 Americans.

The Facebook obsession story isn’t a new one, and of course, neither are the crazy statistics. But this really doesn’t make the fact that Facebook’s concrete integration into our lives, less interesting than it is, and definitely doesn’t make it less alarming.

For instance, take the top 50 searches statistics into account. Facebook related searches represented 3.48% in 2010, a staggering jump of 207% from 2009! If Facebook continues to grow this rampantly, what would their dominance be like in 10 years? You do the math.

Now examine another statistic closely, 48% of 18-34 year old Facebook users log on to Facebook right when they wake up. We expect them to brush their teeth first of course, but what happened to staple out-of-bed habits like reading the newspaper, checking e-mail or even feeding the dog? All out of the window, as logging into Facebook has naturally become the most prioritized activity after brushing your teeth. Even more interesting is the fact that 28% of the same age group check Facebook on their smart phones even before they get out of bed. So that makes Facebook a greater priority than brushing teeth to those 28%!

Has Facebook transcended from a social media network to THE social media network? Is Facebook merely a connective medium that binds the globe together, or is it THE connective medium that connects us? We used to think it’s the former, but we’re not so sure anymore.
