Know what your child is playing

It’s been mentioned in previous articles that games can be good for kids. While this is true, it doesn’t mean that children should be allowed to play video games with no supervision.

Just like you wouldn’t want to give children access to R-rated movies, you wouldn’t want to give them free access to video games that are meant for a more mature audience. After all, that is where the danger lies. You can’t keep your kids away from inappropriate materials if you’re not keeping an eye on them.

Proper supervision is important in any child’s development, that’s a simple fact.

According to CBC News, as little as five percent of parents know that their kids are playing online games. This is surprising, considering the fact that many parents like to talk about the dangers of too much gaming.

The reasons for this are vague, but the situation is confusing. If parents want to be aware of all the media that their kids take in, shouldn’t games be near the top of that list?

It’s about time that parents got a little more involved in their kids’ gaming habits. This is especially true of those parents with younger children, who are more impressionable.

Well, it’s about time to get involved. Why? Because being involved in what games your kids play will yield a lot of benefits!

Learn what’s on that disc before letting your kids play

First of all, you’ll end up forming a bond with your kid because they’ll appreciate the fact that you’re interested in what they’re doing.

Second, you will have a good idea of what type of games he or she is playing, and so will know whether or not they need to be watched closely, or given a bit more freedom. Getting them to play Bookworm Adventures instead of GTA IV will certainly impact them in a positive manner.

Finally, you may even begin to enjoy gaming! If that were to happen, then you’d have an excellent and possibly life-long hobby to share with your son or daughter. What could be better than that?
