Recently, we talked about how games can help bring back an interest in education. We spoke about how including games in the classroom could help make kids care about learning.
Well, it seems that video games may also prepare you for the future by preparing your brains for complex jobs.
In fact, according to Medical News Today, a study done in York University shows that playing video games could have a huge impact on how your motor skills develop.
The first group included people who had played games for at least four hours a week over a period of three years. The other group didn’t have this gaming experience.
What researchers found was that the first group was better at completing a set of challenges involving hand-eye coordination.
Not only that, the study also found that the first group’s brains now acted differently from the 2nd group. Their brains did not rely on the area normally in charge of hand-eye coordination.
In fact, those who often played games may have brains that have been altered to work more efficiently.
Obviously, this doesn’t mean that we should suddenly expect video games to give us mental superpowers. The study itself was quite limited. Only young males were tested, and so there is still a lot of further research to be done.
However, this current study looks promising. It will hopefully lead to further research that can identify the link between gaming and mental health. For now, it’s just another step in the right direction.
Gamers can’t claim that their hobby will produce future leaders yet. However, there’s a very good chance that many important people in the future will be avid gamers!
