For all the fun, innovative and cool features that Facebook have implemented since their inception, they really hit the wall this time round with their latest feature: facial recognition.

In case you haven’t realized, Facebook has been steadily creeping in its “Suggest Photos of Me to Friends” setting for quite awhile now. Although it’s not exactly the newest thing to hit our favourite social media networking site, it definitely has the potential to be one of the most sinister. Would you want less-than-glamorous photos of you floating around on Facebook, with an easy option for your friends to tag you in it?

That’s exactly what the Facebook Facial Recognition software does. Whenever a photo with your face in it gets uploaded by anyone on Facebook (you could just be an innocent bystander at a party or a witness in a traffic accident), Facebook will detect it and suggest to you friend to tag you in it. While this can be of casual fun, the flipside to it is that you have no control over public identification of yourself.

If you thought that was bad, here worse: this facial recognition program is an opt-out instead of the common opt-in. What this means is that the recognition setting has been turned “on” by default and requires to you manually turn it off in your privacy settings.
