Hold on a second. It’s only been such a short time and iOS 5 has been hacked already? Apparently so, as it is possible to upgrade and activate the iOS 5 firmware without any developer account.

And we have Mert Erdir, an Apple lover, to thank for this! All this is carried out by exploiting a security flaw during the activation process. This new exploit is a combination of Voiceover and the pull down notifications to activate the phone. Too technical for your liking? Well here’s the simple explanation: basically no major hacking is required, for this is simply a backdoor exploit. Warning: While the process is simple and inconsequential, we cannot be held responsible for what you do with your iOS device.

If however, running iOS 5 firmware is something intriguing to you, we recommend backing up your SHSH blobs on the iOS 4.3.3 firmware. This way if you encounter any error, you can fall back to iOS 4.3.3 on your iDevice. In addition this will only work on the iPhone; all others will have to keep waiting.

Before you proceed, we have received some reports of users losing the ability to make calls after performing this hack. We recommend you weigh your options about unofficially updating to the iOS 5 firmware

There are 2 Stages to this:

Stage One: Upgrade to the iOS 5 firmware

Step 1: Download the iOS 5 firmware file for your iPhone. We cannot provide a link (as this would be illegal), however you can easily search for "ios5 ipsw" for and torrent the iOS 5 firmware.
Step 2 Now launch iTunes and update your iPhone using iTunes. To carry this out, connect your iPhone to your computer, and click on the Check for Update button with the Option (Mac) or Shift (PC) key pressed. Select the iOS 5 IPSQ file from your download folder.
Step 3 Wait for the upgrade installation to complete. You should see a new activation screen.

Stage Two: Now to exploit the backdoor activation

Step 1: Triple click the home button, to activate the Voice Over.
Step 2: Triple click the home button again to activate Emergency Call.
Step 3: Click on the Emergency Call, while it’s switching, swipe down with your three fingers.
Step 4: The Notification Center will appear!
Step 5: Click on the Weather widget and wait for it to load.
Step 6: Click on the home button to exit to iPhone’s springboard.

Having completed both stages, your iPhone should now be activated with the iOS 5 firmware.
